Cambridge still one of the top UK cities to work in

New research from Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest job and recruiting sites, has shown that Cambridge is now ranked 3rd in the ’25 Best UK Towns & Cities to Work In’ for 2018.

Started in 2016, Glassdoor’s latest list is compiled by ranking UK towns and cities with the highest Glassdoor score, determined by three equally weighted factors:

  • how easy it is to get a job (hiring opportunity)
  • how affordable it is to live there (cost of living)
  • how satisfied employees are working there (overall job satisfaction).

As part of this report, Glassdoor includes a comprehensive breakdown of each town and city’s median pay for employees, current average home value, overall job satisfaction rating, population and number of current job openings.

The number 1 spot again goes to Slough, with its high number of open jobs compared to the local population (and relatively high average salaries). A new entry on the list at No. 2 is Gloucester, followed by Cambridge at No. 3. Reading and Guildford make up the top 5 places, both of which having a large number of open jobs.

There are a number of new entries on the list including Gloucester (No. 2), Guildford (No. 5), Chelmsford (No. 10), Blackburn (No. 12), Liverpool (No. 19), Norwich (No. 20), Preston (No. 24) and Falkirk (No. 25).

What might be surprising to come is that some of the UK’s biggest cities did not even make the top 25 this year, including London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Sheffield. Manchester, who came runner-up last year, has dropped five places down to No. 7.

When it comes to the highest median salaries, Cambridge tops the list at £30,464. Cambridge also shares the top spot for most satisfied employees with a Glassdoor Job Satisfaction rating of 3.6.

All in all, this is a very positive report for Cambridge and reflects how much effort local employers are putting in to ensure their employee’s feel valued and fairly rewarded.
