We’re looking for a Control Systems Engineer, with a good knowledge of control systems modelling and optimisation, to join our Cambridge based team and contribute to the development of leading-edge technologies for control of complex optical switching fabrics for agile optical networks.
About the Role
HUBER+SUHNER Polatis designs and manufactures all-optical fibre-optic switches which make and maintain their optical connections by means of our patented DirectLight™ beam steering technology. The challenge for the control team is to enable the highly resonant, micro-mechanical actuators to change position quickly, allowing us to accurately direct[CMD1] [NC2] the beam, and then firmly maintain the actuators’ position in the presence of vibration and other disturbances. The control loops are implemented digitally with a number of actuators managed by a single DSP and FPGA combination.
In this role, you’ll be working as part of a small team responsible for control loop design and implementation. You’ll undertake experimental and analytical work to model dynamic systems and to try out alternative control approaches. Other responsibilities include:
· Design and simulation of new control system candidates
· Specification of algorithms for implementation on target hardware platforms
· Design of processes for selecting control system parameters in production
· Maintenance of implemented processes
About You
To be successful, you’ll need to have a degree in a numerate subject, preferably engineering (electronics or control), maths (applied) or physics. You’ll also need a minimum of two years’ relevant experience in control systems modelling and optimisation with some knowledge of hardware/ software interfacing or have undertaken a practical final year project or Master’s degree with practical project, in electronics, control systems, mechatronics or robotics. You’ll have experience of applying outcomes of modelling to real systems plus a working knowledge of MATLAB, Scilab or Octave. You’ll also need to be self-motivated, organised, and flexible with great attention to detail.
About Polatis
We offer a friendly and informal work environment in a prime location on the Cambridge Science Park, a competitive salary and annual bonus scheme, plus a range of benefits including private health care, a generous non-contributory pension scheme, health shield cash back plan, and cycle to work scheme.
