Software Test Engineer Permanent

When you join us, you will work closely with the other Test Engineers in the team to execute existing manual and automated test cases. As you become more familiar with the domain and our products, you will start writing the test cases for new product features that are under development.

With day-to-day activities spanning the whole development life-cycle, you’ll be included in requirements and design review, peer review of other test engineers’ test case specifications and automated test code, right through to integration and system testing.

Most importantly you will have an opportunity to be part of multidisciplinary projects delivering products that make a difference to peoples’ lives!

About you:

At ILS we recognise that enthusiasm and an ability to think through problems are as valuable as experience with specific technologies.  The list below gives a flavour of the skills that would be useful in the role, but we are open to applications from bright enthusiastic candidates, even if you do not match all of them:

• A broad range of testing methodologies: you know that exploratory, automated, functional, performance, integration, system and regression testing all have their place, and you will do whatever it takes to find the defects that need to be fixed.
• Obsessive attention to detail: you recognise that it’s not possible to fix every issue in a product, but you always notice the details and contribute to their triage. Ensure bugs/issues are clearly described.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills: you have opinions, and you’re able to express them quickly and clearly, but your focus is on building great products not on philosophical debate.
• Software development: we have an existing automated test suite for some of our tools, so the familiarity with a programming language would be beneficial to help you understand code so you can extend exiting test suites.
• Testing of user interfaces and API’s: you know that the tools you need to use differ depending on the environment, but you also know how to apply your experience and the underlying common principles to those environments.
• Linux server testing: you can use ssh to find and investigate log files to help you write bug reports, without a windowed environment to hold your hand.
• Able to work independently, establishing priorities without supervision.
• Experience of testing systems that rely on large-scale relational databases: maybe you’ve dabbled in SQL.
• Working within a software development team to achieve delivery of version releases according to planned schedules, and in compliance with a Quality Management System.

Any of the following specific skills are desirable, and would give you a head-start in the role:

• Use of JAMA for reviews, writing test cases and test execution.
• Use of Jira for bug and task tracking.
• Version control with Git and GitHub; you’re comfortable with software engineering practices such as code reviews, pull requests and merging changes across branches.
• Familiarity with the use of Bash, Python, GoLang or some other programming language.
• Experience of testing high-performance or big data processing systems.
• Working within a regulated environment.
